An important element of the story is Carly’s letters to Alex and the woman he one day falls in love with. Why did Carly write these letters? What do these letters say about Carly’s state of mind before she died? How does Carly’s letter to Alex influence his decision to date after her death? Why does Alex give the other letter to Katie, and how does Katie react to it?

Alex assures Katie at the end of the novel that the loss of his home and business is not her fault. Why would Katie think it was? Why would Alex say it wasn’t? Did Katie knowingly place Alex and his kids in harm’s way? Who shoulders the heaviest burden of guilt and why?
